What to do During a San Diego Weekend Getaway
Go visit the Hotel Del Coronado and explore Coronado Island
Hotel Del Coronado is full of history and a beautiful hotel on a large beach in Coronado. The hotel has a rich history. It’s where the Marilyn Monroe movie, Some Like it Hot was filmed. There are plenty of displays in the hotel to read and learn about its’ history.
You can also find clothing shops, a sweets shop and restaurants to dine at throughout the hotel’s property. It is also nice to just walk along the hotel’s paved walkways through their outdoor area.
Hotel Del Coronado also puts up a Christmas tree each holiday season in the lobby that always has a different theme each year. If you happen to be in San Diego during the holidays, there is also an outdoor, beachfront ice skating rink to go skating by the sea.
Have a night out on the town in the Gaslamp District
The Gaslamp District in Downtown San Diego has plenty of bars, restaurants and even a House of Blues. It is conveniently located near Horton Plaza, Balboa Park, the San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park.
Go sailing around Mission Bay
With almost perfect weather all year round, why not go for a sailing trip? The Bay provides a natural protection to make the water calm and there are many options for renting sailboats.
Take a Gondola Ride around the Coronado Cays
I have yet to do this one, but so many people rave about this experience. You can take a gondola ride through the canals of the Coronado Cays. Depending on your package, you can even get a musician to accompany your ride.
This would be the perfect thing to do if you are planning on having a romantic weekend getaway in San Diego.
Walk around a Farmer’s Market
There are so many farmer’s markets throughout the many neighborhoods and towns that make up San Diego. Explore fresh food, spices and other goods at one of the many farmer’s markets.
At least one farmer’s market a day takes place in San Diego. Make sure you check the dates and times before you go.
Explore Little Italy
Also located in Downtown San Diego is the neighborhood of Little Italy. You’ll find the streets of Little Italy bustling if you walk through during a weekend evening. It is also the location of one of San Diego’s many farmer’s markets.
Tour the USS Midway
The USS Midway is a museum docked in San Diego and open to visitor’s almost everyday of the year. This can be a great activity if you are traveling with people who have different interests.
It is a retired aircraft carrier and you go to the flight deck to check out the planes or go down below deck to see how sailors lived when they were stationed on it. Make sure to check if the days and times you want to visit are available.
Take a walk down Ocean Beach Pier
San Diego has many beaches and many piers. The Ocean Beach Pier stretches out quite a ways into the ocean. As you walk down it, you’ll see many people fishing and some even having a bite to eat at the cafe that is on the pier.
After you finish walking the pier you can go grab a bite to eat at one of Ocean Beach’s many restaurants like Wonderland Ocean Pub or the famous burger joint, Hodad’s.
Hike at Torrey Pines State Beach
If you feel like having a more active weekend, you can take a hike along the bluffs at Torrey Pines State Beach. All the hikes start at the top of a rather steep hill but once up there you can choose an easy walking path or a more challenging hike. You’ll be met with breathtaking views from atop the bluffs.
Taste some wine and take in views of the vineyard at Orfila
While San Diego is known for it’s many microbreweries, it also has a large amount of wineries throughout the county.
Have a glass of wine and watch the sun set over the wineries many acres of nature.
Often times wineries will have live music or food trucks during more busy times like the weekend. It’s always a good idea to check if a winery is open before going (many close for weddings and other events) and if they will have food available if you’re planning on eating. Some even allow you to bring or own food.
You could always pick up a couple items at the farmer’s market, bring it to a winery that allows outside food, get a glass of wine and make a date night out of it.
Walk around Balboa Park and learn something at one of the many museums located there
Balboa Park is a large, beautiful park full of history, museums and other attractions. There are art museums, history museums, music museums, different shops, theaters and even a science center.
This is also where the world famous San Diego Zoo is located.
There is so much to see in Balboa Park, you can spend much more than one day here. Since the park is so big it contains a lot about the history of San Diego which you can read more about here.
It also has beautiful gardens, a fountain and a large organ pavilion. Come here for a picnic one day and then spend the afternoon learning something new.
Catch a baseball game at Petco Park
If you are a Padres fan or a baseball fan and here during the season, you can catch a game at Petco Park. There are a lot of options for tickets and you’ll be close to a ton of restaurants and bars.
Not interested in the actual game? You can go in the morning on a guided tour of the stadium and get to go down in the dugout, see the visitor’s locker room, the media room and learn about the history and building of the stadium.
