What does a kitchen mean to you? The centerpiece of the home. The focal point of the home. The heart of the home. Some people would say that the kitchen is the most important room in he house. It is the kitchen that turns the house into a home.
I’ve been thinking a lot about kitchens lately. Mostly because I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about the meaning of the word home.
Home changes it’s meaning throughout your life.
It starts as one thing and later, either through relationships or through moves and changing cities, it means something else. But, just because the meaning changes, or the city changes, doesn’t mean that home is any less important.
To me, the kitchen is where all the big an important life events take place. All the ones that happen in a home at least. It’s also where so many small events take place. Every small event, every tiny memory created in the kitchen builds up until you create a life. It is what creates a home out of a house.
I can remember so many events taking place in the kitchen when I was growing up. The kitchen was where I had surprise gifts given to me in the early morning of my birthday.
The kitchen was where Happy Birthday was sung and cake was cut. It was where I had my first sip of wine and where I would find out devastating news. Holidays take place in the kitchen and family traditions are created.
These are the big events, but like I mentioned before, the kitchen is also where so many important small events take place.
It’s where friends and family gather together every night to share a meal or maybe a glass of wine. It’s where a mother teaches her daughter a family recipe. It’s where someone finds a love for cooking or has the courage to try something new and daring.
I love the kitchen. I love being in the kitchen with loved one’s and cooking a delicious meal. Or making a killer cup of coffee in the morning.
The kitchen is a place of memories and the heart of the home.
I remember grinding away in the kitchen the first time I ever made bagels from scratch. Remembering that reminding me of the first time I ever made bread from scratch or pasta. Which in turn reminds me of my favorite bruschetta recipe, the one I always whip up right before company comes over.
It’s the heart of the home. It’s why I write so much about things that take place in the kitchen. Consequently, memories created in the kitchen are some of my most cherished.
I’ve tried new recipes in the kitchen, made horrible tasting dinners in the kitchen, experimented with cocktails and different gadgets. I love that when you cook in the kitchen or even mix a drink together, you are creating.
Cooking, baking, mixing. They are all the art of creating something special in the most important room in a house. They are the reasons why a kitchen bring the heart into a house.
Above all, I have so many memories in the kitchen. I can’t decide which one is my favorite.
What’s your favorite memory in the kitchen? Do you agree that it is the heart of the home?
